When Do You Need a Manual Handling Refresher?
A manual handling certificate issued by Collier Training Solutions is valid for 3 years. As the expiry date approaches, it is good practice to arrange a refresher course to renew the certificate and reaffirm safe handling techniques. While there is no specific regulation in Ireland that mandates the exact frequency of refresher training, the 3-year interval is widely accepted as best practice and reflects the recommendations within HSA guidance documents.
A refresher is also advisable when an employee returns to work after an extended period of absence, when they change role to one involving significantly different manual handling tasks, when there has been a manual handling incident in the workplace, or when a workplace risk assessment identifies deficiencies in technique or knowledge.
For employers, maintaining up-to-date certificates for all relevant staff demonstrates a proactive approach to health and safety that will be looked on favourably during HSA inspections, insurance assessments, and tender or pre-qualification processes.
What Does the Refresher Course Cover?
The manual handling refresher course is structured as a half-day programme — the same duration as the initial course. This ensures that participants receive a thorough update rather than a cursory overview. The content includes a review of relevant legislation and any updates since the previous training, a refresher on anatomy, injury mechanisms, and the TILE risk assessment framework, and a full practical session reconfirming correct technique for lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
Both written and practical assessments are conducted. Participants who successfully complete the assessments receive a new certificate valid for a further 3 years.

Planning Your Team's Refresher Programme
For organisations with large teams, certificates will expire at different times depending on when individuals were first trained. It is worth maintaining a simple training register that records the name, training date, and certificate expiry for each employee. This allows you to plan refresher sessions proactively rather than reacting when certificates have already lapsed.
Collier Training Solutions can work with you to design a rolling refresher programme that keeps your entire workforce in compliance throughout the year, with regular on-site visits scheduled around your operational requirements.
