Manual Handling Training for Office and Retail Workers

Many office and retail employers underestimate their manual handling obligations, assuming that training is only relevant to warehousing or construction. In fact, the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 apply wherever any employee manually moves a load that could cause injury. Office workers lifting and carrying boxes of paper, IT equipment, or office furniture; retail assistants unloading stock deliveries, stocking shelves, and moving display stands — all are covered.

For office and retail environments, the nature of manual handling risks differs from heavy industry. Loads are often lighter but handled awkwardly, infrequently enough that workers have not developed good habits, and in spaces not designed for manual handling (narrow aisles, staircases, cluttered storage rooms). The half-day course includes theory covering HSA obligations, injury mechanics and prevention, and the TILE risk assessment framework. The practical component involves exercises sized for the loads and environments common in office and retail work, with individual feedback from the instructor. Written and practical assessments confirm understanding, and certificates are valid for 3 years.

On-site delivery works particularly well for retail and office employers, as it allows training to take place in the actual working environment using familiar equipment. Sessions can be timed around opening hours, shift changes, or quiet trading periods.
